Madelyn and I were couch surfing for more than 2 ½ years, living with friends or relatives. Childcare costs were eating almost every penny I earned. We finally got through the housing list, and Family Service helped us with the deposit. They also helped with sheets, blankets, pans and dishes. Now I get food boxes from them, and my girl and I are starting over.
In addition to the primary programs and services offered by Family Service, we are able to coordinate several special projects through the generosity provided by our community partners.
Holiday Food Boxes – Each year, hundreds of families receive fixings for Thanksgiving & Christmas meals with all the trimmings! Sign-ups start the month before distribution–mid-October to mid-November.
Adopt-a-Family – At Christmas, area businesses and individuals can sign up to adopt a family. Please Note: Adopted families are not eligible for the Toys for Tots program.
Back-to-School Backpacks – The added cost of school supplies is a burden that’s tough for many families to bear. Family Service provides hundreds of children with backpacks filled with classroom necessities.
Birthday Books – An anonymous donor has contributed funds to help inspire a new generation of readers! Thanks to this generous gift, Family Service provides a brand new book, complete with gift wrap, to children with an upcoming birthday.
Suit Up – We help prepare men to enter the workforce by offering new and gently-used dress suits once a person lines up a job interview. Suits typically include pants, shirt, tie and jacket.
