Family Service has been helping our neighbors in need since 1906. Our organization is one of the longest-serving nonprofit organizations in the state of Montana. This tenure speaks highly of our community and how we come together to care for one another.
Formed at the turn of the 20th century by a group of Billings pastors, Family Service has been active in Yellowstone County since 1906. Ledgers and notes from the early days show funds being used to help pay for medicine for sick children and clothing being provided to a family whose home was destroyed by fire.
Although no longer run by area pastors, Family Service continues to extend a helping hand to neighbors in need through our bountiful food boxes, rent and utility assistance, clothing quarter and thrift store, education funding for better employment and other special projects.
While the methods used to deliver help have certainly changed over the years, our central core beliefs have remained the same:
Our Vision
Family Service envisions a community where all may live with stability and dignity.
Our Mission
Family Service collaboratively assists individuals & families facing hunger, homelessness, and poverty in Yellowstone County and surrounding areas.
Our Values

Family Service, motivated by a strong belief in a better future, assists those in need with essential resources for a stable life.
Integrity:
Family Service recognizes the importance of accountability and requires exemplary stewardship of all resources provided by our donors. grantors, volunteers. staff, vendors, and clients to alleviate hunger, homelessness, and poverty.
Compassion:

Collaboration:
Family Service commits to working with others to maximize our efforts, knowing that collaboration is the best way to achieve solutions in our community.

My husband died last year. It has thrown me off the rails. I really had no idea how I would feed my children and afford rent. Thanks to Family Service, we are scraping by and I am back in school to get training for a new job.
